Youth Diversion Program
The Youth Diversion Program is a proactive initiative aimed at helping juveniles (ages 10-16) who are cited for Certain Class C misdemeanor offenses avoid formal adjudication. Its primary purposes is to redirect at-risk youth early in the process, hold them accountable in a constructive manner, and connect them and their families with resources and support services that foster positive development and long-term community safety.
When a juvenile receives a citation eligible for diversion, the process begins with a review by the Juvenile Case Manager. The case manager evaluates the case to determine if it qualifies for diversion based on specific eligibility criteria. If eligible, the case manager will contact the parent or guardian to schedule a required meeting involving the juvenile, the parent/guardian, and the Juvenile Case Manager. During this meeting, the diversion option will be discussed in detail, and if both the juvenile and their parent/guardian agree to participate, a diversion agreement will be signed. This agreement outlines the expectations, requirements, and goals the juvenile must meet, which may include educational classes, counseling, community service, or other supportive programs. A $50 Local Youth Diversion Administrative Fee is also collected at this stage, unless waived due to financial hardship.
By participating in this program, juveniles can resolve their citation without going through a formal court process, helping to prevent a criminal record while still ensuring accountability and access to supportive services. The goal is not just to close cases but to open doors for youth to make better choices and build brighter futures.
