[ARCHIVED] New park update

The City of Cedar Hill has a variety of parks and open space including the popular Cedar Hill State Park and the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center as well as 32 neighborhood and community parks, and a system of greenbelts within approximately 2,482.50 acres, plus over 36 miles of trails, but the idea for a new park has also been brewing in the city for some too.

Recently, a Public Meeting was held in order for city staff and residents to discuss the idea for what is being currently being referred to as midtown park.

“The purpose of the meeting was to gather input from the public on what types of Park amenities they would like to see in the new park,” said Larry Foos, CPRP and the Cedar Hill Director of Parks & Recreation.

Foos said there were over 50 citizens in attendance at the meeting and they participated in several activities to determine their favorite park amenities.

The proposed location for the park is currently undeveloped, heavily wooded land along a creek bed that runs behind the Government Center in the midtown zone. Foos said the cost to build this park has yet to be determined.

“The park amenities have not been decided upon either,” he added. “The park has not yet been named nor has the process been determined on how to name the park,” so for now it is being referred to as midtown park.

Not sure how long the idea for this park has been in the works, he said, it will be located on property adjacent to the Government Center and will be approximately six acres in size.

“Being fairly new to the city, I'm not sure how far back this park has been talked about,” Foos said. “It is mentioned in the city center development plan created in 2010.”

The new park will feature a trail that will connect the midtown area to the new 1382 trail that will head to the state park.

Foos said this park will be unique because of its downtown location enabling it to be a central hub for the city’s trail system. There is also the potential for the park to provide numerous community activities and as the city center plan is developed the park will also be an oasis of green space and the place to be for local activities too.

“Cedar Hill is a special place and we place a heavy emphasis on open space, developed parks and a first class trail system,” Foos concluded. ”The upcoming City Center signature park and trail will be the center point for the city’s parks and trails system and will be a catalyst for development for the midtown area.”
